Come Back, Giorgetto!

I haven't had much of an opinion about the new Scirocco, other than it isn't a Scirocco.

But driving in my Giugiaro-designed car today, I suddenly realized I liked the new Scirocco even less.

All I'm really going to say about this car is this:

I think Volkswagen needs to put Giorgetto back on the payroll.

the good old 60ies-70ies-80ies are gone for italdesign. that happened 20 years ago. lately they do weird things. i mean really weird stuff. i am quite glad that they do not do vw designs anymore as i see the show cars what they present... it is really sad, but the genius of car styling does not design anymore. or he is simply outdated these days, might happen. i hope vw will use its huge resource of talented creative stuff to make something outstanding finally...
to summarize my thoughts in a sentence, i would say: stay where you are, giorgetto.

Good point - and you may be right.
But my understanding though is that Giorgetto doesn't do as much as he used to because he has to groom Fabrizio to design or lead or both. I think the weird stuff coming out is (and has been) a reflection of this unfortunate situation. They may also be relying more on the designers, sorry, illustrators they never let design before. I believe the proposals Giorgetto has been involved in though have been of much higher quality.

The same goes for VW. If you'll notice in many of my posts I give VW a hard time because they have the talent to do better. Their designers have a larger wall to climb though than the totalitarian rule Giorgetto had.

So my main reason for wanting him back is that he had more design clout than the VW designers have now which is why we get the crap we do.

Who knows, maybe I just want the 60's, 70's and 80's back?

i believe everybody, who is a true designer is willing the good old times back, when there was a positive vision about the future - ergo designing. the time is now: it is still possible to do something interesting.

the story about vw, well i think it is its management (as always), which does not allow to let the boys do what they are really capable to do. there are just few (if not just 1) guys on earth, who are strong enough to push to production cars like veyron or the tt. and giorgetto would not help this situation at all. it is about standing behind an idea and supporting the design and development team.

but let's wait and see what will change under the porsche management. i truly hope that there will be no more cayenne and panamera... but this wish might not be fulfilled, and i will see again heavily chromed baroque styling issues called "volkswagen"...

Hello there! I think the time just made your wish come true: Geneva Motor Show 2011 and the VW concepts from Italdesign are ready. I am not sure it is much better, than what VW pushes out these days... I guess it is more less the proof of my theory.
